Returning home to Auckland, NZ in 2018 after having spent two years in the UK crafting his sound in the renowned Bristol underground music scene, Luke-W - a rapper, singer/songwriter, and producer - had his sights set on establishing himself as a household name in Aotearoa.
Recording a series of demos in his first year back, he soon came to the attention of Indie/Urban label Move The Crowd Records (MTC) - who have released the likes of Smashproof, Sid Diamond & Kid In Space - and in 2019 they released a collection of self-produced singles as a debut ‘Progress’ EP, receiving a feature from NZ Musician and notably piquing the interest of industry heads.
Following this up, Luke-W gained national attention with the 2020 release of ‘Timing Is Everything’ with tracks included ‘Breathe’ (featuring Sid Diamond), ‘The Ride’ - which featured on MTV Upload and Edge TV and included a stunning live radio performance on The Edge radio station - and ‘True Cause’ which reached #12 on the NZ Hot Singles chart and was licensed by Waka Kotahi for a campaign which ran for a number of years.
In 2021, a remix package of ‘The Ride’ - which featured a booming D&B remix with burgeoning D&B producer CHEFF - catapulted to success with dual-editorial playlist additions, including one of the largest global Spotify playlists. To date Luke-W has amassed over a million streams across platforms and continues to grow an international audience with thousands of monthly listeners in NZ, the UK, Germany, Australia and US.
Over this time Luke-W continued to perform live shows on a regular basis, and has developed as an engaging live performer at venues such as Galatos, Neck of The Woods, Vodafone Events Centre and Whammy Bar.
In late 2021, Luke-W announced his debut album ‘Close As Ever’ which is set to be related on October 14th 2022. The first single ‘Rhyme & Reason’ - a collaboration with UK producer Edward Melton - reached #13 in the NZ Hot Singles charts receiving more international attention, and the second of his collaborations with Melton, ‘HYB’ was released in May and achieved ‘NewTracks’ additions from NZ on Air and national radio play. His latest single ‘Recall’ a soul-bearing anthem earned multiple playlisting in Spotify’s ‘R&B Feels’ and ‘Mellow Styles’ and day-time playlisting with Mai FM, along with glowing international editorial reviews referencing his melodic songwriting qualities as reminiscent to the likes of early Drake, 6lack and Post Malone.
In November, 2022, Luke-W is set to headline the national ‘Close As Ever’ tour with dates in Raglan, Christchurch, Wellington & Auckland.
